A long time ago, no people lived on the earth.  The world was the land of the animals.  One time, the sun did not come out for three years.  Snow fell all day long.  It was cold all the time.
It was cold all the time.
The animals had a big meeting about the cold.  The ones who walked on the land came to the meeting.  The ones who flew in the sky came to the meeting.  And the one who swam in the sea came to the meeting, too.
In fact, everyone came to the meeting except Bear.  That is when someone said that no one had seen any bears at all for three years.
The animals knew they must find the lost heat.  But where was it?  And who would go to look for it? Y quien iría a buscarlo?
These are the brave animals that decided to go:  Lynx, Fox, Wolf, Wolverine, Mouse, Pike, (a kind of fish that swims in a lake, and Dogfish (a small shark).
Who would look for the lost heat?
The animals decided they would look for the lost heat in the Upper World.  They looked and looked for the door that opens to the Upper World.  At last, they found it!  They opened the door.  The animals went up.
In the Upper World, they came to a lake.  By the lake there was a tipi.  By the tipi were two bear cubs.
The two bear cubs sat by a fire.
Two bear cubs sat by a fire.
"Hello," said the animals. "Hola," dijeron los animales.
"Hello," said the bear cubs. "Hola," dijeron los cachorros.
"Where is your mother?" asked the animals. "Donde está su mama?" preguntaron los animales.
"She is hunting," said one of the bear cubs. "Está cazando," dijo uno de los cachorros.
Inside the tipi hung three big bags.  The animals pointed to the first bag.  "What is in this bag?" they asked. Dentro del tipi se colgaban tres bolsas.  Los animales señalaron a la primera bolsa.  "Que lleva esta bolsa?" preguntaron.
"That is where our mother keeps the rain," they said.
The animals pointed to the second bag.  "What is in this bag?" they asked. Los animales señalaron a la segunda bolsa.  "Que lleva esta bolsa?" preguntaron.
"That is the wind," said the cubs. "Esa es el viento," dijeron los cachorros.
The animals pointed to the third bag.  "And what is in this bag?" they asked. Los animales señalaron a la tercera bolsa.  "Y que lleva esta bolsa?" preguntaron.
"Oh, we cannot let you know that," said the cubs.  Our mother told us it was a great secret.  If we tell, she will bop us on our heads when she comes back."
"You can tell us," said Fox.  "She will never know." "Nos pueden decir," dijo Zorro.  "Nunca sabrá."
The cubs were very quiet when they spoke.   Los cachorros dijeron en voz baja.
"That is the bag where she keeps the heat," they said.
"Oh!" said the animals.  They said good-bye to the cubs.  Soon they found a place to talk.  How good it was that they had found the lost heat!
Still, they knew Mother Bear might come back any time.
"I know!" said Lynx.  "I will turn into a deer on the other side of the lake."
"Good idea," said Wolverine.  "Then the Mother Bear will see you and want to get you.  And that will give us time to get the bag with the heat."
"Yes!"  And I will help, too," said Mouse.  "I will chew a hole in the paddle.  That way it will take even longer for her to get across." "Si!
"Yes, yes!" they all said. "Si, si!" todos dijeron.
One of the cubs called out, "Look mother!  A deer is on the other side of the lake."
"Well, well!" said Mother Bear. "Vaya!" dijo Mamá Oso.
Mother Bear took her canoe into the lake.  She paddled across the lake as fast as she could. Mamá Oso llevó su canoa al lago.  Remaba a través del lago.  Entonces se fugió.
Deer saw the Mother Bear coming to get her.  She stayed close to the lake.  Then she ran away.
Now old Mother Bear tried to go even faster.
All of a sudden, the paddle broke where Mouse had chewed it!  Old Mother Bear fell into the lake!
The other animals saw this from the other side.  As soon as Mother Bear fell into the water, they ran into the tipi.  Quickly, they pulled down the bag with the heat.
They went as fast as they could to get the bag back to the door of the Lower World.  But the bag was very big.  It was hard to carry.
When one animal got tired, another one would take a turn.  They moved and pushed and carried as fast as they could.  They knew that old Mother Bear would soon get back to her tipi.  She would find out the bag was gone.  Then she would be very, very mad!
The animals looked back and saw old Mother Bear was coming close to them.  All at once, she ran at them!
Together, the animals pushed the bag until it went through the hole.
Yes!  The bag dropped down to the Lower World. Estupendo!  La bolsa bajó al Mundo Bajo.
They jumped down to the Lower World.
And the animals jumped in after it, just in time! Y los animales brincaron despues, justo a tiempo!
As soon as the bag dropped into the world below, it broke.  All the heat from inside the bag rushed out.  Warm air filled the Lower World.  Soon the ice and snow began to melt.
Before long, the trees and flowers were green once more. Spring had come again!  From that time until now, it has always been springtime after a cold winter.  And that is just the way it is today.
Spring had come again!
